Our Favourite Popular (and unusual) Baby Names in 2019

Choosing a name for your baby can be pretty difficult. Even after much thought and debate, once your baby is born, you may suddenly feel they don’t suit the name you thought you wanted! This may sound crazy, but it can feel like your baby is born with a personality of their own, straight out the womb. Sometimes, a name that seemed great before, now just doesn’t quite fit.

It feels like there are so many things to take into consideration before choosing a name. Does it rhyme with anything? Is it likely to be shortened into a less lovely name? How many other babies will have the same name? Is it unusual? Is it unusual enough? What if my friends and family don’t like it?!

If you’re looking for baby name ideas, the easiest place to go for inspiration is to check out a book, or one of the many lists online. There are lists with thousands of names, along with a general guide to how popular each particular name is.

How are baby names ranked in popularity?

Baby names are often ranked in popularity by a website, depending on the number of page views that each name gets on their own site.

If you want to find out the most popular names based on the birth register, these are published at the Office of National Statistics. But you can only see up to two years previously. The most popular 2018 results aren’t published until September this year (2019). Online baby name lists are one way of predicting the results that birth registers will publish when the information becomes available.

What are the most popular girls and boys names right now?

Predictably, with the birth of the new Royal baby, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, the name Archie has shot up the popular baby names list, right to the top! It’s now the most popular name for boys (if you’re using the page view formula).

Archie is closely followed by Milo, Asher, Jasper, Silas and Theodore according to site Nameberry.

Isla is currently ranked the most popular girls name, with a trend for names that end with an “a” or “e” like Olivia, Aurora, Ada, Amara, Maeve, Cora, Luna and Posie all in the top ten.

Our favourite popular baby names for girls

There are some really gorgeous names on the charts right now. Some of my favourite popular baby names for girls picked from online lists are:

  • Ava
  • Elsa
  • Sophia
  • Maisie
  • Erin

I think Maisie may be rising up the charts in homage to one of the stars of Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams who played Aria. Just a hunch!

Our favourite popular baby names for boys

Some people may argue that boys names are harder to choose! I don’t know why… what do you think? Some of my favourite popular boy's names are:

  • Charlie
  • Archie
  • Leo
  • Arthur
  • Jaxon

Our favourite unusual baby names

We called our girls Minnie, Coco and Bailey so you may be able to tell I’m a fan of unusual baby names! Ultimately, whatever you call your baby, not everyone will be a fan, so it’s probably best not to worry too much about what anyone else thinks.

Some of my favourite unusual baby names from the list for boys and girls are:

  • Adelai
  • Iliana
  • Marley
  • Nola
  • Rae
  • Roman
  • Bo
